Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons employed in this trade must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice.

Scope of Trade: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning mechanics install, maintain, repair and overhaul industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems and their components. Refrigeration and air conditioning systems means any type of primary or secondary refrigeration systems, other than duct work and sheet metal items associated with the system.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning mechanics maintain and repair, in accordance with the Safety Codes Act, heating and cooling roof top units, appliances and accessories designed for the utilization of natural or propane gas as a fuel for heating and cooling in respect to roof top units or appliances that do not exceed 400,000 btuh (117 kW) input.

Sheet Metal Worker

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons employed in this trade must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice.

Scope of Trade: Sheet metal workers design, manufacture, lay out, fabricate, assemble, handle, erect, install or dismantle, adjust, alter, repair and service a variety of sheet metal products and equipment such as furnaces, fans and air terminal devices for residential, commercial and industrial construction.

Sheet metal workers service, maintain, repair and install, in accordance with the Safety Codes Act, furnaces, combination roof top units, make up air units, ventilating and air conditioning systems, however does not include the refrigerant circuits in respect of air conditioning systems.

Plumber

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons employed in this trade must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice.

Scope of Trade: Plumbers work on residential, commercial, institutional or industrial piping systems including hot liquid heating systems, compressed gas systems, fuel gas systems and appliances and the installation and maintenance of hydronic boilers and controls.

Electrician

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons employed in this trade must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice.

Scope of Trade: Electricians work on any type of residential, commercial, institutional or industrial building or structural electrical system and control systems and associated wiring for electrical appliances, electrical heating, solar heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

Gas Fitter

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons employed in this trade must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice. There is no interprovincial "Red Seal" for this trade.

Scope of Trade: Gasfitters size, install, test, adjust and service natural gas and propane equipment ranging from residential furnaces to industrial boilers.

Gasfitters install, repair and service pipes and fitting relating to gas mains.

Gasfitter 1st Class may work on any kind of residential, commercial or industrial gas system, including any gas appliances regardless of the gas appliance's btuh rating and associated piping and fitting, air supply and venting.

Gasfitter 2nd Class may work on any kind of residential, commercial or industrial gas system, including any gas appliance that does not exceed a rating of 400,000 btuh and the associated piping and fittings, air supply and venting.

British Columbia

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning mechanics install, maintain, repair and overhaul industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems and their component parts.

Residential air conditioning systems 3 tons (36,000 btuh) 230/1/60 or less do not require to be installed by a refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic.

Sheet Metal Worker

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Sheet Metal Workers design, manufacture, lay out, fabricate, assemble, handle, erect, install or dismantle, adjust, alter, repair and service a variety of sheet metal products and equipment such as furnaces, fans, and air terminal devices.

Plumber

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Plumbers work on residential, commercial, institutional or industrial piping systems, excluding refrigerant circuits.

Electrician

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Electricians work on residential, commercial, institutional or industrial building or structural electrical systems.

Gas Fitter

Only registered contractors and licensed employees of registered contractors may install or alter a gas system.

Scope of Licensing:
Gasfitter Class A: The holder while employed by a contractor, may install or alter any gas system.

Gasfitter Class B: The holder, while employed by a contractor and has a Piping trades qualification, may install and alter atmospheric appliances with draft hoods and other appliances and vents up to and including 690,000 btuh (220kW)

Gas Piping licence: The holder, while employed by a contractor and has a Sheet Metal trades qualification, may install and test gas piping.

Gas Venting licence: The holder, while employed by a contractor, may alter, repair and install venting.

Manitoba

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (Commercial) may install, service, assemble, repair and maintain any equipment or component of a refrigeration or air conditioning system.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (Residential) may install, alter or repair residential heating, ventilating, air conditioning and potable water heating equipment utilizing single phase energy not exceeding 240 volts, 6 gauge wire or 60 amps and utilizing fossil fuels with inputs not exceeding 400,000 btuh (118 kW).

Gas Fitter training included in the above trade sectors.

New Brunswick

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics install, service and repair refrigeration equipment in the home, business and industry for conditioning of air and for the cooling of water, brine and all types of industrial products.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics assemble and install compressors, condensers, evaporators, motors, other units of refrigeration equipment and refrigerant piping.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics overhaul and repair pumps, compressors, valves, component parts and piping used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics reclaim, recover, recycle or reuse ozone depleting substances.

Sheet Metal Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Sheet metal workers engage in manufacturing, fabricating, assembling, erecting, installing, reconditioning, adjusting, repairing, and servicing all ferrous and non-ferrous sheet metal of, or equivalent to #10 U.S. gauge or lighter gauge and all other materials used instead.

Sheet metal workers install domestic warm air furnaces in dwellings up to and including four unit apartments.

Electrician Construction

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Electricians (Construction) are involved in the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring systems and related equipment in residential, commercial and industrial establishments and other structures.

Plumber

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Plumbers are involved in constructing, extending, altering, renewing or repairing plumbing systems, together with all connections, fixtures, and soil and venting pipes.

Oil Burner Mechanic (Residential)

Designated occupation with compulsory certification required. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Oil Burner Mechanics install, service, adjust and repair oil burners with firing rates up to 400,000 btuh or 3 gallons per hour, used for heating purposes.

Oil Burner Mechanics install, service and repair control devices and associated electrical wiring used in connection with oil burner and associated equipment.

Newfoundland/Labrador

Electrician (Construction)

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Electricians (Construction) are involved in the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring systems and related equipment in residential, commercial and industrial establishments and other structures.

Northwest Territories/Nunavut

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Scope of Trade: Refrigeration and Air conditioning Mechanics install, maintain, repair and overhaul industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems and their components. Refrigeration and air conditioning systems means any type of primary or secondary refrigeration systems, other than duct work and sheet metal items associated with the system.

Sheet Metal Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Sheet metal workers fabricate, install, repair and service a variety of sheet metal products and equipment. Other duties include metal cladding of insulated piping and equipment on industrial sites.

Electrician

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Electricians lay out, assemble, install, test and repair electrical fixtures apparatus, control equipment, signal equipment and wiring needed to supply heat, lights and power to all types of buildings.

Plumber

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Plumbers plan, install and repair piping systems and fixtures for water supply, drainage, waste, venting or hot liquid heating.

Oil Burner Mechanic (Residential)

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Oil Burner Mechanics install, service, adjust and repair high pressure, low pressure and vaporizing oil burners with outputs up to 400,000 Btuh (residential and small commercial).

Gas Fitter

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade. There is no interprovincial "Red Seal" in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Gas fitters size, install, test and service both natural gas and propane gas lines, as well as gas-fired equipment which supply heat and light to buildings.

Gasfitter Class 1 may work on any kind of residential, commercial or industrial gas system, including any gas appliances regardless of the gas appliances Btuh rating and associated piping and fittings, air supply and venting.

Gasfitter Class 2 is restricted to working on applications of less than 400,000 Btuh.

The Gasfitter Class 2 apprenticeship has been combined into the apprenticeship program for plumbers and steam fitter - pipe fitter and would receive a separate Journeyman Certificate for Gasfitter (Class 2).

Nova Scotia

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Installs and services refrigerating and air conditioning systems.

Sheet Metal Worker

This trade is subject to voluntary certification.

Scope of Trade: Designs, makes, installs and repairs sheet metal products and parts; interprets blueprints and sketches.

Electrician (Construction)

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Installs, alters, repairs and maintains electrical systems in buildings and residences.

Plumber

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Installs and repairs piping and other equipment used to move, store or dispose of water, gas and sewage.

Oil Burner Mechanic (Residential)

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Oil Burner Mechanics install, service, adjust and repair high pressure, low pressure and vaporizing oil burners with output ratings up to 400,000 Btuh (residential and small commercial).

Gas Fitter

Designated trade, however not compulsory under the Department of Education. Certification enforced by the Fire Marshall's Office for individuals and companies must show their employees have the appropriate certification to qualify for mandatory licensing by the Ministry of Environment & Labour.

Scope of Trade: Gas Technician 3 - under the direct supervision of a person who is on the job site at all times and is the holder of a Tech 1 or Tech 2 certificate may install, activate or purge gas piping or tubing that is less than 2 inches in diameter; reactivate a previously installed or converted natural gas or propane appliance.

Gas Technician 2 - may install, inspect, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove a natural gas or propane appliance that has an input of 400,000 Btuh or less and the equipment and accessories essential to its operation.

Gas Technician 1 - may install, inspect, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove any natural gas or propane appliance and the equipment and accessories essential to its operation.

Ontario

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certificate of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Refrigeration and Air conditioning Mechanics lays out, assembles, installs and maintains in the field, any cooling or heating-cooling combination system for residential, commercial or industrial purposes within the limitations of the Energy Act.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics install or connect piping for the purpose of conveying refrigerants of all types for either primary or secondary cooling systems.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics overhaul and repair any equipment used in a refrigeration or air conditioning system and tests, adjusts and maintains all controls on refrigeration or air conditioning systems including air balancing.

These regulations do not include persons engaged in the repair or installation of 120 volt, single phase hermetically sealed domestic portable appliances.

Sheet Metal Worker

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: A Sheet Metal Worker manufactures, fabricates, assembles, handles, erects, dismantles, reconditions, adjusts, alters, repairs or services all ferrous and nonferrous sheet metal work of #10 U.S. gauge or any equivalent or lighter gauge and all other materials in lieu thereof.

Electrician

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Construction and Maintenance Electrician (Branch 1) - lays out, assembles, installs, repairs, connects or tests electrical fixtures, apparatus, control equipment and wiring systems of alarm, communication, light, heat or power in buildings or other structures.

Domestic and Rural Electrician (Branch 2) - electrical wiring relating to the construction, erection, repair, remodeling or alterations of houses and multiple dwellings containing six or fewer dwellings.

Plumber

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: A plumber lays out, assembles, installs, maintains or repairs in any structure, building or site, piping fixtures and appliances for the supply of water for any domestic or industrial purpose or for the disposal of water that has been used for any domestic or industrial purpose.

A plumber installs the piping for any process, including the conveyance of gas, or any tubing for a pneumatic or air handling system.

Gas Technician / Oil Burner Technician

Mandatory training and certification covered under the Ontario Energy Act and administered by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) which is responsible to the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations (MCCR).

Scope of Certification: Gas Technician 3 - under the direct supervision of a person who is the holder of a G.1 or G.2 authorization may install, activate or purge gas piping or tubing that is less then 2 inches in diameter; reactivate a previously installed or converted natural gas or propane appliance.

Gas Technician 2 - may install, inspect, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove a natural gas or propane appliance that has an input of 400,000 Btuh or less and the equipment and accessories essential to its operation.

Gas Technician 1 - may install, inspect, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove any natural gas or propane appliance and the equipment and accessories essential to its operation.

Oil Burner Technician 3 - under the direct supervision of a person who is the holder of an OBT-2 or OBT-1 may clean, remove, and replace a flue pipe or a barometric damper; clean, lubricate or perform maintenance on an appliance; work on the oil burner, control or accessories on appliances that have an input rating not greater than 2 U.S. gallons per hour.

Oil Burner Technician 2 - may install, alter, purge, repair, activate, service or remove an oil-fired appliance that has an input not greater than 7 U.S. gallons per hour and the accessories that form a part of the appliance essential to the operation of the appliance.

Oil Burner Technician 1 - may install, inspect, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove any oil-fired appliance and the accessories that form a part of the appliance assembly and that are essential to the operation of the appliance.

Prince Edward Island

Construction Electrician

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Electricians (Construction) work on residential, commercial and industrial sites during and after construction.

Electricians layout, assemble, install, repair and maintain electrical equipment and components.

Plumber

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Plumbers install, repair, maintain pipes, fixtures and other plumbing equipment used for water distribution and waste water disposal in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics install, maintain and repair residential central air conditioning systems and commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Scope of Trade: Refrigeration Mechanics install, maintain and repair primary and secondary refrigeration and cooling systems in commercial and industrial settings.

Sheet Metal Worker

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or must be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Sheet metal workers use metal of 10 gauge or lighter to make and repair products and buildings.

Electrician

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Electricians install, repair, test and maintain wiring, controls, motors and other electrical devices.

Plumber

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice to work in this trade. Plumbers may also be licensed as Gasfitters.

Scope of Trade: Plumbers install, fit, alter and repair water and soil piping, rain-water leaders, baths, water closets and sanitary and fire protection apparatus for a house or other building, including the junction to the mains and sewers and the connecting of tanks to sewers and mains.

Plumbers install, maintain, alter and repair any gas installation and gas equipment as defined in the Gas Licensing Act and any medical gas installations and equipment.

Gas Fitter

Gas Fitter is not a designated trade rather it is part of the Plumber and/or Steam Fitter-Pipe Fitter Trade.

Scope of Certification: Gas Fitter (Domestic) - may work on any kind of residential, commercial or industrial natural gas system, including any natural gas appliance that does not exceed a rating of 400,000 Btuh and the associated piping and fittings, air supply and venting.

Gas Fitter (General) - may work on any kind of residential, commercial or industrial natural gas or propane system, including any appliances regardless of the gas appliance's Btuh rating and associated piping and fittings, air supply and venting.

Propane (Domestic) - may work on any kind of residential, commercial or industrial propane gas system, including any propane appliance that does not exceed a rating of 400,000 Btuh and the associated piping and fittings, air supply and venting.

Yukon

Construction Electrician

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. A person must either hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice in order to work in this trade.

Scope of Trade: Electricians (Construction) are involved in the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring systems and related equipment in residential, commercial and industrial establishments and other structures.

Gas Fitter

Designated trade requiring compulsory certification. Persons employed in this trade must hold a Certification of Qualification or be a Registered Apprentice. There is no interprovincial "Red Seal" for this trade, however the Yukon recognizes the Alberta certification.

Scope of Trade: Gas Fitters size, install, test, adjust and service natural gas and propane equipment ranging from residential furnaces to industrial boilers.

Gas Fitters install, repair and service pipes and fittings relating to gas mains.

Gas Fitter (1st Class) may work on any kind of residential, commercial or industrial gas system, including gas appliances regardless of the gas appliance's Btuh rating and associated piping and fitting, air supply and venting.

Gas Fitter (2nd Class) may work on any kind of residential, commercial or industrial gas system, including any gas appliance that does not exceed a rating of 400,000 Btuh and the associated piping and fittings, air supply and venting.

LPG Verification - gas fitters must write a one-time examination provided by the Yukon Department of Education to allow them to qualify for working with propane which allows them to obtain installation permits.
