The Thermostat Recovery Program (TRP) is a stewardship program focused on recovering and recycling thermostats that are no longer in use. We accept mercury-containing, electronic and mechanical thermostats and ensure that all the components, especially the mercury, are kept out of the waste stream.
The program is fully delivered by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). The TRP works with HVAC and plumbing contractors, wholesalers, municipalities and regional districts, as well as individual home owners. Switching to newer and more energy-efficient programmable thermostats and responsibly disposing of older mercury-containing thermostats reduces energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and prevents mercury from contaminating our air, soil, and water.
