How to Participate

  1. Fill in the form below to register for TRP.
  2. HRAI will send you a collection pail and a pre-paid return Purolator waybill.
  3. Bring the collection pail with you on jobs. When you replace old thermostats with new programmable thermostats, place the entire intact old mercury thermostat in the collection pail.
  4. When the pail is full, or when you are requested to send it in, call Purolator and ship the container using the pre-paid waybill.

Participant Options:*


Select this option if your business collects thermostats as part of your regular operations, and/or you would like to allow local residents and small businesses to dispose of their old thermostats in your collection pails. If you select this option, your business will be listed in our Public Drop-Off Location lookup directory on our website.

This option is ideal for HVACR Wholesalers, recycling centers, and municipal depots, particularly those located in rural areas.


Select this option if your business collects thermostats as part of your regular operations, however would like to keep your thermostat collection exclusive to your customer.

This option is ideal for HVACR Contractors and Wholesalers for their exclusive use.


Select this option if you are unable to get to a Public Drop-Off Location, and/or would like to receive a one-time shipment of a small collection pail, which holds roughly four (4) thermostats.

This option is ideal for consumer's use on a one-time basis.

  • Understand that while in my possession, I am fully responsible for the contents of the Thermostat Recovery Program collection container including any mercury-containing thermostat switches;
  • Understand that placing items and substances other than intact thermostats into the Thermostat Recovery Program collection container could pose a risk of contamination to other handlers within the collection infrastructure and could lead to my business being in violation of provincial regulations surrounding the transportation of hazardous wastes;
  • Agree that only thermostats will be placed into TRP collection containers, and the container will be examined prior to shipping via Purolator to ensure the absence of material contamination; and
  • Agree to indemnify HRAI from any and all such liability.
