WMO Presents Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion, 2022

In October 2022, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) published the Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 2022, the tenth assessment to date.

The report highlights “advances and updates in the scientific understanding of ozone depletion since the 2018 Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion and provides policy-relevant scientific information on current challenges and future policy choices.”

The key areas of the 57-page report cover the major achievements and actions taken under the Montreal Protocol, trends in ozone depleting substances, HFCs, stratospheric ozone recovery, and information and alternative scenarios to addressing ozone depletion for policymakers.

The authors note, however, that the “potential climate benefits from improved energy efficiency in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector are not included here, and are thought to have the potential to have an impact much larger than that of any of the scenarios and cases considered” in the report
