US Tariff Policy & Canada Response

After a month-long delay that offered a brief hope of
a reprieve, the U.S. government followed through with
across-the-board 25% tariffs on March 4th -- and the
Canadian government followed through as expected
with its initial $30 billion response. The next day, a
planned second round was announced, covering an
additional $125 billion in imports. The new list includes
some HVACR products.
A 21-day consultation period will allow HRAI to
facilitate member inputs concerning how the products
of our sector should be treated.
MANUFACTURERS AIR CONCERNS
HRAI manufacturer members that produce
in Canada, and/or are Canadian owned, have
expressed concern about tariff exemptions.
Some believe a strong retaliatory response is
needed to protect the interests of Canadian
producers. To hear concerns raised by these
Canadian manufacturers, HRAI convened a
special working group to discuss appropriate
solutions and actions. The views of this group
may affect how HRAI advises government on
which products should or shouldn’t be subject
to tariffs in the new round of consultations.
