Update on Paid Sick Leave in BC

The BC Government is developing paid sick leave for employees, to accommodate staying home when sick or injured, without losing wages, for a set number of days each year. The new model will come into effect on January 1, 2022.

Phase One – now complete – used surveys that sought input from workers and employers on their current paid sick leave programs and on what they would like to see in a province-wide model.

Phase Two has now begun. Informed by the results of the surveys, an Options Paper has been developed which presents a range of possible models for the new paid sick leave entitlement..

Engagement timeline:

Phase 1: Surveys were open from August 5 to September 14, 2021.

Phase 2: Options Paper has now been posted for public until October 25, 2021.

How to participate

In the first phase of this engagement, we sought information from employers and workers about what paid sick leave they currently have in their workplaces and what improvements could be made.  Check out the Options Paper noted below.
