TSSA Issues Revised Advisory on Alternate Process for Pressure Piping Inspection

The Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) has released a revised version of its advisory governing the Alternate Process for Pressure Piping Inspection. For contractors who are not aware the Alternate Process for Pressure Piping Inspection process allows eligible piping contractors to conduct inspections on eligible piping systems and submit the required documentation directly to TSSA, rather than relying on a TSSA site inspection. The update refines key definitions, expands eligibility, and reflects industry feedback since the original version came into effect.

What’s Changed Since the Previous Advisory?

This 2025 revision builds on the original advisory issued in April 2023. Here are the notable changes to be eligible for the Alternate Piping Process:

  • The revised advisory now requires piping contractors to have held their Certificate of Authorization (COA) for at least three years, and to have completed regulated work. Previously, no such minimum experience duration was specified.
  • A formal definition of "Qualified Person" has been introduced, adding clarity to who may perform inspections under the alternate process.
  • The revision adds the CSA-Certified Medical Gas Piping and Systems Installer Certificate to the list of acceptable qualifications for Qualified Personnel—a credential not included in the original version.
  • The design pressure limit for process piping systems designed to ASME B31.3 has increased—from a maximum of 375 psi to 500 psi.

HRAI members are encouraged to review the new criteria carefully and take full advantage of the alternate inspection pathway where applicable.
