The Perfect Balance: Bill Yeo’s Next Chapter

After decades spent building a career across technical and trade-related industries, Bill Yeo has discovered something many professionals strive for but few truly achieve: a retirement that offers both fulfillment AND freedom.

Yeo’s career path was anything but linear. Beginning in industrial water treatment, where he spent more than two decades working with refrigeration and cooling systems, he developed a strong foundation in thermodynamics and system performance. From there, he transitioned into hazardous waste management, gaining valuable expertise in the safe handling and disposal of refrigerants. His most recent role, as a marketing manager with a refrigeration gas company, allowed him to deepen his technical knowledge even further—particularly around refrigerant chemistry, safety, and evolving industry demands.

But despite a successful and evolving career, Yeo made the decision to retire at 59; a choice driven not by burnout, but by clarity.

“I had some health issues that I was struggling with,” he shared. “I didn’t want to remain sitting behind a desk. I wanted to be more active.”

Recognizing the growing pressures within the refrigerant market and the personal toll they might take, Yeo chose to prioritize his well-being. The result was transformative. With time to focus on his health, he became more active, improved his fitness, and found himself in a better place both physically and mentally.

Yet for Yeo, retirement was never about stepping away entirely. Instead, it became an opportunity to redefine how he contributes.

That opportunity came through HRAI.

Approached by HRAI colleagues to assist with select initiatives, Yeo agreed, on one condition:

it had to remain flexible. Today, he works on a part-time basis, typically one or two days a week, supporting projects that benefit the HVACR industry without compromising his new lifestyle.

“It’s the perfect balance,” he says.

That balance is evident in his daily routine. Mornings begin with a walk with his dog, followed by time spent enjoying the day’s pace. In the summer, he can often be found on his boat, staying active and embracing the freedom he worked hard to earn. At the same time, his continued involvement with HRAI keeps him connected—to people, to ideas, and to an industry he knows well.

“I enjoy the social aspect—coming into the office, seeing people, attending conferences,” Yeo explains. “It’s a very positive experience.”

In many ways, he has distilled work down to its most rewarding elements: collaboration, purpose, and contribution; without the stress and demands of a full-time role.

For those considering retirement, Yeo’s advice is both practical and personal. Financial preparedness played a role in his ability to retire early, but equally important was his mindset.

“I always heard stories of people retiring and then not doing anything,” he says. “I like the idea of getting up, moving, and having a purpose every day.”

That sense of purpose continues to guide him. And while he doesn’t see an end date for his part-time contributions, he’s confident in the path he’s chosen.

Less stress. Better health. Continued impact.

For Bill Yeo, retirement isn’t an ending. It’s a well-earned evolution.
