Supply chain cybersecurity: A growing priority

Technology is making supply chains smarter, more reactive, and more connected. At the same time, these digital transformations are making stakeholders along the chain more exposed to cyber threats. To avoid becoming a target, manufacturers are inclined to understand where they’re more vulnerable and take actions to shore their virtual defenses.

“Cybersecurity threats are on the rise for manufacturers, with the industry accounting for 65% of all ransomware attacks in 2021,” writes Ben Stewart, vice president of product strategy with Plex, in a recent article for Supply Chain Brain.

Citing Plex’s 2022 State of Smart Manufacturing Report: Security Edition report, Stewart notes that a majority of manufacturers surveyed do not have a plan for operational disruption and that many cite cybersecurity and risk mitigation as a major threat to their growth. To that end, he provides key steps manufacturers can take to bolster their cyber preparedness, including:

  • Identify and collaborate with key stakeholders to narrow in on cybersecurity vulnerabilities and potential solutions.
  • Make the best business case for cybersecurity investments
  • Research and select the appropriate cybersecurity systems
  • Create a plan to design and deploy your selected systems effectively
  • Manage change and drive adoption

“Security adoption is people-driven,” Stewart adds. “Employees are integral to protecting your company, and it’s important to develop a culture of vigilance accompanied by routine reviews and inspections. Reinforce and build cybersecurity awareness through regular training, accountability, and communication. Remember to include your suppliers and stress their responsibility to protect their access points.”
