Quebec Announces the Phase-out of Residential oil-fired heating systems

The installation of oil-fired heating systems will be banned in all new construction projects as of Dec. 31, 2021.  Two years later, as of December 31, 2023, installing an oil furnace or replacing one with a fossil fuel furnace in existing buildings will also be prohibited, according to a regulation set by the Quebec government. The regulation also bans the repair of oil-fuelled heating systems over 20 years old or of oil-fuelled water heaters over 10 years old.

Quebec believes that these measures will contribute to reaching its 2030 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to heating buildings in the province by 50 %.

Reported last week in the Montreal Gazette last week, nearly 200,000 Quebec households still use oil-fuelled heating systems, according to the province. The combustion of home heating oil also generates nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide and pollutes the air with fine particles.
