HRAI Town Hall Series: Moonlighting

HRAI takes great pride in advocating for a safe, responsible and fair industry where indoor environment systems and refrigeration processes are designed, installed and serviced by qualified professionals in order to ensure efficient and energy-conscious operation.

With respect to the above, HRAI received a submission at the 2022 Town Hall meeting requesting that HRAI explore ways to combat “moonlighting” in the HVACR industry. Based on the suggestion, moonlighting was discussed at the last 2 contractor division board meetings. This hot-button issue is clearly a complex topic that warrants further consideration.

HRAI’s Town Hall meeting is designed to give Contractor members a voice in HRAI’s matters.  Members may raise issues directly or vet them at the Chapter level and have the Chapter bring them forward to the HRAI staff and the Contractors Board of Directors. This article is a first in a series of updates with regards to past Town Hall submissions.

When it comes to promoting fair, legitimate business practices, HRAI has advocated for a responsible and fair contracting in the HVACR industry via:

  • Promotion of educational programs, both for technical and business.

  • Requiring of contracting companies to provide HRAI with proof of insurance, trade licenses and other documents when applying for membership in its contractors division

  • Members must periodically verify the above credentials upon request

  • Member contractors must agree to conform to the Contractors Division Code of Ethics when signing up for a membership

  • HRAI emphasizes the importance of using qualified contractors to end users and promotes its contractor members on an online contractor locator and call centre

  • Consumer tips page on its website

  • HRAI has videos in its library regarding consumer tips.

  • Outreach to third party organizations, governments and other stakeholders regarding the importance using qualified contractors.
