HRAI National Capital Chapter AGM and Dinner Recap: A Focus on Refrigerants and Leadership

The HRAI National Capital Chapter gathered on December 5, 2024, for its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Chapter Dinner Meeting at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Ottawa Airport. The event provided an opportunity for members and industry professionals to come together to discuss governance updates, exchange ideas, and dive into critical industry topics like the future of refrigerants.

The evening began with the AGM, where members reviewed the chapter’s accomplishments and outlined plans for the future. A key highlight was the presentation of the chapter’s financial update, showcasing a stable fiscal standing.  The meeting also included the approval of the new board of directors, whose leadership is set to guide the chapter into 2025. Newly elected Chair Carlo Magliocchetti (Home Service Group), along with Vice-Chair Andre Pirnat (AP Heating and Technical Services), Treasurer Nicholas Lea (Condair Ltd.), Secretary Robert Rutledge (Hi-Mark Occupational Skills), and Directors at Large George Boszormeny (Francis Plumbing & Heating / Walker ClimateCare) and Tim Suitter (Capital City Heating and Cooling), bring a wealth of experience and a strong vision for advancing the chapter’s goals.  The Chapter has not had an active Board of Directors since the onset of COVID, making this a noteworthy achievement.

Following the AGM, attendees enjoyed a dinner that served as a platform for informal networking and collaboration. The relaxed atmosphere encouraged meaningful conversations among peers, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Members and guests shared insights on industry challenges and opportunities, laying the groundwork for future initiatives.

The evening’s feature presentation focused on one of the HVACR industry’s most pressing topics: refrigerants. Perry Chao, HRAI’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, delivered an engaging and informative session on the transition to lower-impact refrigerants, particularly A2Ls. Perry explained how global regulations, industry innovation, and market demand are driving the shift towards more sustainable refrigerants.

Attendees learned about the challenges associated with adopting A2Ls, including safety considerations, technical requirements, and necessary training for HVACR professionals. Perry emphasized the opportunities this transition presents for businesses to become leaders in sustainability and innovation. He also highlighted HRAI’s advocacy efforts and resources, which are designed to help members navigate these changes effectively and position themselves for success in the evolving market.

Looking ahead, members can expect more events and initiatives aimed at addressing critical industry issues, fostering innovation, and enhancing member engagement. The December 5th meeting was a testament to the value of coming together as a community to share knowledge, build connections, and work towards a more sustainable and successful future.

Stay tuned for updates on upcoming chapter activities and HRAI initiatives designed to support members in navigating the challenges and opportunities of the HVACR industry.
