HRAI & TRP discuss proposed EPR framework with Alberta Environment and Parks

HRAI staff, along with thermostat manufacturer members, met with representatives from the Alberta Ministry of Environment and Parks (AEP) on January 12, 2022 to discuss the province’s proposed extended producer responsibility (EPR) framework for Hazardous and Special Products (HSP).

HRAI recently submitted a letter to AEP following consultations on the proposed framework. The letter highlights the industry’s efforts to date in responsibly collecting and managing thermostats, and expresses concerns specific to proposed approaches to collection targets, service level standards, and the proposed enforcement model to support compliance.

HRAI took this opportunity to meet with policy advisors to showcase how the Thermostat Recovery Program operates, and express unique considerations for policy planning surrounding sunset products, such as mercury thermostats.

HRAI will keep members informed of any new developments over the next few months.
