HRAI Joins Canada Green Buildings Strategy Discussions

At the end of April, HRAI was invited to participate in a roundtable discussion with Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, Julie Dabrusin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and the Minister of Natural Resources, as well as Mollie Johnson, Assistant Deputy Minister, and members of her team.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss early steps in the development of the “Canada Green Buildings Strategy” that was announced earlier in April under the 2022 Budget. The federal government has committed $150 million over five years, starting 2022-23, to NRCan for purposes of developing a strategy that will include initiatives to further drive building code reform; accelerate the adoption and implementation of performance-based national building codes; promote the use of lower carbon construction materials; and increase the climate resilience of existing buildings.

HRAI was represented by VP of Government Stakeholder Relations Martin Luymes, who was joined by representatives from the Canada Green Building Council, Efficiency Canada, Canadian colleges, and the banking sector.  The discussion was very preliminary but animated, and included a focus on financing measures, industry training as well as a number of novel ideas for facilitating the introduction and market acceptance of measures to reduce carbon emissions in buildings.
