HRAI Enters Training Agreement with the ESCO Institute

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) and the ESCO Institute have entered into an agreement to jointly develop a Low GWP Refrigerant Safety Program for the Canadian market.

As the HVACR industry once again transitions to new equipment, and new refrigerants, HVACR professionals will need to learn how to safely handle, store, transport, and service these new systems. As many low GWP refrigerants are mildly flammable, additional safety precautions and protocols must be followed.

The Low GWP Refrigerant Safety Training Program will be made available online and include an assessment component. As a result of input from key industry stakeholders across Canada, it was determined that the training program will be affordable, and easily accessible online. The consulted industry stakeholders unanimously agreed that the training should be mandatory for tenured technicians and uniform across all provinces. HRAI has begun discussions with some provincial regulators to make this a reality.

HRAI and ESCO Institute are jointly committed, through this collaborative effort, to ensure that the industry is properly trained on the handling, safety procedures, as well as the applicable standards and codes related to handling these new refrigerants. HRAI anticipates the program to launch in June 2022.
