On May 9th and 10th, HRAI’s Board of Directors and a handful of dedicated volunteers joined CEO Sandy MacLeod and Vice President of Government and Stakeholder Relations Martin Luymes in a series of impactful meetings on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.  The group met with Members of Parliament to discuss key policy issues of interest to members.  The HRAI team was joined by a delegation from ASHRAE that included six volunteers.

Mostly intent on building awareness, the team engaged with 15 different MPs and Senators from three political parties, as well as key staff at the US Embassy, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Opposition Leader’s Office (OLO).

The delegation shared some basic messages with government leaders, among them that the HVACR industry must be given the freedom to lead the way on actions to reduce carbon emissions in homes and buildings across Canada, with appropriate supports from government.  That means support for workforce development to facilitate the transition to new technologies, but also insisting that industry has a seat at the table much earlier in the process of program and policy development. The group also discussed support for Indoor Air Quality, trades training and domestic manufacturing of low carbon HVACR technologies.

On May 10th, the volunteer group met in a roundtable setting with senior staff at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Environment and Climate Change Canada and the National Research Council (NRC) building code development team.
