HRAI Seeking Solutions to Lower Barriers to HVACR Trade Between Canada and EU
By Perry Chao, HRAI Director of Regulatory Affairs
HRAI was recently invited to speak with officials from Global Affairs Canada about opportunities to improve trade in HVACR products between Canada and the European Union. On May 8, Karrolyn Van Helden, Deputy Director of the Technical Barriers and Regulations Division, met with HRAI’s Vice-President of Government and Stakeholder Relations, Martin Luymes, Director of Regulatory Affairs Perry Chao, and HRAI’s Project Manager John Williams, to discuss HRAI’s work to identify regulatory hurdles affecting trade between the two regions.

The project will examine a range of trade obstacles, including requirements related to technical safety and product performance, that can make it difficult or costly to move HVACR products between Canada and the EU. The immediate focus is on “non-tariff barriers” affecting the importation of EU-sourced products. The research will yield recommendations to the federal government on how it might assist in addressing known regulatory challenges, while helping HRAI better understand barriers facing Canadian products entering the EU market. The findings will also support guidance for HRAI members interested in pursuing trade opportunities between the two jurisdictions.
HRAI anticipated that the project can be completed over summer 2026, with findings that can be shared with members later in the year.
