Exciting progress with the BRIDGING THE GAP FOR HEAT PUMP PROFICIENCY project!
The Bridging the Gap Assessment Phase I report – the results from the initial technician assessment and stakeholder engagement – will be published shortly. The report will be available for download from the Bridging the Gap project page. The report highlights issues faced by the industry as we transition from fossil fuel heat sources to emission-free heat pumps, the skills gap and areas where knowledge needs improvement by the technicians that install, service and maintain heat pumps, and a series of recommendations aimed at addressing and moving the industry along so that it and its workforce can thrive in a low carbon economy.
Curriculum Development (Phase II) is coming along nicely and being developed by the guiding hand of HRAI’s Chris Walsh in conjunction with Fanshawe College, Fleming College and St. Lawrence College. The course is being designed as an intense 8-week training program – a combination of on-line learning and hands-on lab work. The assessment identified the need for an overall approach with heightened attention and training in the areas of sizing and selection, installation, maintenance, controls and line voltage, and codes and commissioning.
We will be starting registration soon for Phase III. The training* will be delivered at Fanshawe College (Woodstock), Fleming College (Peterborough), St. Lawrence College (Kingston), Mohawk College (Hamilton) and Herzing College (Toronto). Space is limited and will be assigned first come, first enrolled. The commitment is REAL – 8 weeks, up to10 hours per week. The on-line learning is flexible and can be taken any time of day or evening, and MUST be completed before the weekend lab (6 hours). Attendance and completion of all 8 weeks is necessary to attain the Certificate.
* To take the training, ODP certification is required or the commitment to attain it by the end of the training period.
