ECCC Launches Consultation on Draft 2022-2026 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy
On March 11, 2022, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Hon. Steven Guilbeault, launched consultations on the draft 2022-2026 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS).
Developed under the Federal Sustainable Development Act, the FSDS sets out the “goals, targets, and actions that will shape the Government’s sustainable development plans over the next four years.”
Modeled after the 2015 United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a particular focus on its environmental aspects, the draft FSDS contains 17 chapters, each identifying a specific goal or action.
These include promoting women in the environmental and clean technology sectors, increasing Canadians’ access to clean energy, and fostering innovation and green infrastructure in Canada.
According to the press release, nearly one hundred organizations across the federal government will play a role in achieving the strategy’s goals and targets, “in part by preparing their own strategies that comply with and contribute to achieving environmental outcomes related to their programs.”
Members will also find in the draft FSDS (click here for pdf version) the measurable timeframes attached to each goal or target along with the minister(s) responsible for achieving them.
Comments on the draft 2022-2026 FSDS will be accepted from March 11 to July 9, 2022.
