Canada’s Plastics Registry – Reporting Delayed to September 2027 for Most HVACR Products

HRAI has previously shared information with members about mandatory reporting into Canada’s Plastics Registry (link: click here), part of the federal government’s effort to reduce the amount of plastic waste imported into or produced Canada.

Reporting is currently limited to products that are ending up in residential waste streams, with the obligation to report falling on the first Canadian company responsible for bringing plastic products into the country.

If your company manufactures, imports, or places plastic on the market in Canada, inside products or as packaging, reporting on your company's plastic usage started in September 2025, for products making use of residential waste systems.

Reporting for products that make use of construction or commercial/industrial waste systems was expected to begin this year, but Environment and Climate Change Canada has announced that this second phase of reporting will be delayed until 2027. A formal announcement of this change will come through a Canada Gazette Notice this spring. Instructions for reporting will come, also through a Canada Gazette Notice, this summer.

The Federal government’s website for the registry contains more information about what needs to reported, the reporting platform, frequently asked questions and other resources.
