BC Budget Report Picks up on Key HRAI Budget Submissions
Provincial and Federal budgets are one avenue that associations like HRAI have available to influence government priorities and, as such, HRAI strives to make budget submissions federally and in many provinces every year.
HRAI’s advocacy on HVACR workforce development needs in BC is being heard. Some of the important themes from HRAI’s Budget 2023 submission have been included in the BC Budget 2023 Consultation Report.
Overarching HRAI priorities in BC continue to be tied to workforce development -- as is the case in most parts of the country -- and to the Province’s ambitious climate goals. The re-introduction of compulsory trades in BC and the rapidly accelerating pace of climate initiatives have been a significant focus for advocacy in BC recently and the primary focus of HRAI’s 2023 Budget Submission in BC.
The consultation report reflected HRAI’s call for the province to create “the necessary conditions for successful transition to a Skilled Trades Certification regime by establishing a robust and clearly understandable program of compliance and ensuring a clear pathway for the addition of new trades” (a residential refrigeration trade, for example), based on market and industry needs.
The report also highlighted HRAI’s concerns that much needed retrofits will outpace current industry capacity and more well trained workers are needed for the success of any low-carbon transition.
There is still much work to be done and as we move into the fall, HRAI will continue to advance these issues.
