BC: New Energy Performance Standards for Residential Boilers Manufactured after January 1, 2022

The new standard requires residential boilers manufactured after January 1, 2022 to have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ≥ 90% efficient. The standard covers residential boilers and combo boilers. The new minimum energy performance standard aligns with the updated federal residential boiler standard which takes effect July 1, 2023. Product certification, labelling and reporting requirements are harmonized with the existing federal standards as well as the federal standards coming into effect July 1, 2023.

The standard is part of the B.C. Energy Efficiency Standards Regulation (EESR), under the Energy Efficiency Act. The EESR is a point-of-sale regulation which regulates energy using products. A six-week stakeholder consultation for the proposed standard was held in September 2019.  The updated standard was approved and ordered as part of the seventh amendment to the B.C. EESR in February 2021.
