A Contractor’s Guide to Adjudication – Empowering Alberta's Trades
Alberta Contractors: Prompt Payment is Here. Are You Ready?
Alberta’s construction industry is experiencing a significant shift, thanks to the introduction of the Prompt Payment and Construction Lien Act (PPCLA) and the enhancements brought by Bill 30. These legislative changes are a game changer—especially for trade contractors.
As a proud member of the Alberta Trade Contractors Council (ATCC), HRAI encourages all members to take full advantage of these new tools designed to support fair and timely payment practices in our industry. The Prompt Payment legislation ensures a clearer path to resolving payment disputes, offering stronger protections and a streamlined process to get paid on time.
One of the key mechanisms under this legislation is Adjudication - a fast, low-cost dispute resolution process specifically tailored for payment-related issues in construction. This isn’t just legal reform—it’s an opportunity. But to unlock its full potential, contractors and their clients need to understand their roles and responsibilities in the payment chain.
That’s where education comes in.
Your Role: Spread the Word
The Contractor’s Guide to Adjudication, written by legal expert Dan Leduc and produced by ATCC, is an excellent starting point. This guide breaks down the adjudication process in simple terms, helping contractors and clients alike navigate their obligations.
We urge HRAI members to download, read, and share this guide with your clients and project partners. Subtly but confidently introduce them to the expectations under the Prompt Payment legislation. The more informed the industry becomes, the sooner we’ll all benefit from faster, fairer payment practices.
