Who would benefit from this course?

This course is designed for HVAC contractors, energy advisors, and residential professionals involved in home retrofit projects or rebate qualification programs. It is ideal for those who need to perform or verify whole home heat loss and gain calculations for existing homes to meet energy or program requirements. Please note if you are responsible for conducting calculations for new home construction or more complex residential systems, we recommend enrolling in HRAI’s Residential Heat Loss and Heat Gain Calculations course, which covers advanced applications and detailed system design.

What you will learn

Discover a simpler way to model homes, calculate heat loads with confidence, and complete retrofit projects that perform better and qualify for rebates.

This hybrid course combines self-paced online learning and hands-on, instructor-led instruction to teach participants how to accurately perform whole home heat loss and gain calculations, primarily for the retrofit market.

Based on the principles of CSA F280, this program focuses on real-world applications of residential load calculations using two powerful digital tools:

  • Stride, a mobile LIDAR scanning app that captures a home’s geometry and layout in minutes.
  • Studio, a 3D modeling and reporting platform that allows users to visualize, edit, and export accurate whole home heat loss and gain reports.

Together, these tools streamline the calculation process from site data collection to professional-grade reporting, helping you improve accuracy, efficiency, and customer confidence.

The course includes a mandatory 1-hour self-paced module introducing the fundamentals of heat loss and gain, followed by 1.5 days of in-person training featuring live demonstrations, group problem-solving, and software-based exercises. Participants will also complete a final exam to demonstrate their competency.

As part of the course, graduates will receive five (5) free Stride scans to apply their learning directly in the field after completion — a valuable opportunity to practice and enhance their new skills.

Major Takeaways

  • Gain recognition for your ability to perform and document whole home residential load calculations using industry-approved digital tools.

  • Upon successful completion, participants will be able to confidently analyze and report on whole home heating and cooling loads, skills valued by HVAC contractors, retrofit program administrators, and energy efficiency professionals.

  • Graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion acknowledging their technical competency in applying CSA F280 methodologies to residential systems using modern scanning and modeling technologies, and will be equipped with five complimentary Stride scans to put their new skills into practice immediately.

Notes:

  • The app is only available for iOS devices equipped with a LiDAR Scanner.
    • iPhone: The first models to include LiDAR are the iPhone 12 Pro Max. All iPhone models released after 12 series also include a LiDAR Scanner.
    • iPad: The iPad Pro (2020 model) was the first iPad to introduce the LiDAR Scanner. All subsequent iPad Pro models continue to feature this technology.
    • If you do not have one of these devices, that is perfectly fine — it will not affect your ability to complete or benefit from the course.
