What:

HPSC: Quality Installation of Forced Air Furnaces and Air Source Heat Pumps Retrofits in
BC Homes

  • Interactive online training opportunity for residential HVAC contractors.
  • Training will cover all components of a proper furnace and heat pump installation including examination of pre-existing HVAC system conditions, equipment and controls installation, commissioning and proper operation/maintenance practices.

Target Audience:

  • residential HVAC contractors in BC
  • This course has been designed for HVAC contractors/ installers with experience in existing home applications. This includes knowledge of:
    • heat loss and heat gain calculations,
    • airflow/duct design,
    • how to measure, test, and commission home comfort systems, and
    • relevant codes and standards in BC.

Time Commitment: approximately 36-hours over 4 weeks

  • 4 hours live with instructor(s) +
  • 32 hours of self-paced online learning.
  • One live session per week during lunchtime (11:30 AM to 12:30 PM PST)
  • All live sessions recorded in case you miss one.
  • All self-paced learning remains open for easy review.
  • First live webinar is scheduled for June 25, 2020.

Module 1 - Introduction/Overview

  • Assessment of knowledge level
  • Introduction to the content and equipment types covered throughout the course
  • Overview of the rebate programs and application process

Module 2 – Design

  • In-depth review of building science topics and important energy concepts to the design of HVAC systems
  • Better understanding of how the home works as a system
  • The science behind best practices and challenges faced in residential retrofits
  • Canadian standards and geographical considerations in designing HVAC system

Module 3 – Installation

  • Hallmarks of a quality installation for total comfort
  • Minimum professional techniques and required tools for quality installation
  • Verification process of proper heating & cooling airflow for best performance
  • Adequacy of electrical load and circuit protection
  • System control requirements
  • Installation checklists for the contractor to ensure consistent, quality installs

Module 4 - Distribution Aspects

  • Industry best practices on minimizing duct leakage
  • Creating optimal airflow balance
  • Producing appropriate documentation to showcase their work

Module 5 – Commissioning

  • Different types of testing of installed systems to ensure quality installs and optimal performance
  • Checklists for contractors to use in the field and ensure consistent work
  • Existing commissioning checklists (e.g. FortisBC gas furnace rebate commissioning checklist)

Module 6 - Owner Education and Maintenance

How to educate homeowners on operating and maintaining their equipment
